Artcade is the Unit's first artist-led project group - June 8 - July 28 2016. It sees artists and designers come together to inhabit a space within the historical ‘St James Arcade’ complex situated within Broadmead, Bristol.
Wishing to highlight aspects of its history, architecture and public use, the group will be creating new work within and in response to the space itself. With a focus on the tensions between public vs private space, interior vs exterior, the group will make the studios open and accessible to the public for 4 days per week between Thu-Sun, inviting visitors to observe artists whilst they develop new and experimental work, encourage discussions around the practice of ‘making’ and an unfiltered gaze into each individuals distinct ‘space within the space’.
As a group they will be exploring the notion of environment; the contrast between function and non-function – emptiness, disuse and abandonment, the designed vs the organic, crude vs refined.
With each artist approaching their work from a unique perspective, the studio will showcase a multi-layered and varied fusion of form and style, culminating in an eclectic mixture of works produced such as paintings, prints, papers, textiles, ceramics, installations and performances.
