‘Don’t wash your dirty laundry in public’.
It took on a life of its own and became part social engagement, part performance but was also participatory, confessional, interactive, and highly conceptual. Clothing is often thought of as a second skin; it makes us think of bodies. Soft and impermanent, clothes can remind us of our mortality. I spent a month hanging out the same clothes again and again in different ways in an empty shop, arranging them in body bags, talking to people, writing down their comments and taking photos. The clothes belong to my family and I’ve been giving them away. It has made me feel very vulnerable at times. I have been making public things that are normally private.

BODY PART-Y 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Come and join us for a BODY PART-Y to celebrate Bodies: a group residency by Synecdoche at The Unit.
Sunday September 25th 2pm - 5pm
RSVP on Facebook here

Over the month of September a group of artists from Synecdoche Art Community will be using The Unit as a studio/testing/research space to explore ideas based around the body. There will be new work being made, as well as old work being displayed. The space will change over the month as the group host workshops and seminars - our doors will often be open for you to come in and see what we're doing, with a different selection of artists being in residence each day (no two days may be the same). The BODY PART-Y will get all of the bodies together for an (almost) end of residency celebration.

Come and join us for a KNEES up, it won't cost you an ARM and a LEG, keep your EYES peeled, we will give you a HAND, don't put your FOOT in it.

Doing. Making. Playing.

How often do we make time to focus on these in the process of producing a finished artwork?

The aim of this morning long project is to carve out a time for ourselves to explore materials and use the process of making as a time for learning. Building upon Open Study Group, Play Day will  explore how play can be a form of research. It is the chance to get together and explore different materials and processes without the pressure of producing anything ‘finished’ and will look at that tipping point in making, where an artwork becomes something exciting, changes direction or goes somewhere else completely. We will be using homemade play dough/salt dough and will do some monoprinting.
The morning might involve some discussion around practice and play so come armed with:
1. An object that you associate with play!
2. Paper for printing on (think any old type of paper- newspaper, tracing paper, printing paper) and a roller if you have one.
3. Tools to gouge, scratch, smooth and mark make with.
4. 2D Objects to incorporate into our monoprints e.g leaves, lace etc.
Monday September 12th 10am - all welcome
